These Bugs Seem to Be Everywhere

If you have seen small black bugs with orange/reddish markings on their backs you are most likely familiar with Boxelder Bugs. They tend to be in large groups which can be intimidating. However, these bugs are pretty harmless.

You Have Probably Seen Them Already

Especially when the sun is shining Boxelder Bugs always seem to form a wall in front of my house. While they only survive a few days, PestWorld.org says, "Boxelder bugs congregate in large numbers on warm rocks, trees and buildings where the sun hits."

Once cooler temperatures start coming in they typically hide more in trees so they don't have to travel as far to get food OR try to find safe places like cracks and crevasses in your home to stay warm.

While Boxelder Bugs are a nuisance there is nothing they can really do to cause damage or harm. According to Web MD the worst that can happen is:

  • Stink when squished
  • Stain surfaces
  • Deform fruit
  • Yellow and damage leaves
  • Stain from fecal matter

The best way to keep your home safe is to make sure you don't have any places for them to hide but if you do see them you can try some of these online home remedies from Redit.
