The ability to order something online is most assuredly a bonus in certain instances.  Perhaps it isn't available locally at that particular moment, and it is a must have.  It's convenient and pretty hassle free.

For myself, I prefer to shop local as much as possible, but sometimes during the holiday season there are some items that simply aren't in our Great Falls or Montana markets.  But after a recent read on a popular app, I may be considering some different alternatives.  Have you recently bought something not made in Montana or in the USA and found you needed to pay a tariff on it upon receiving your package?

Wild Reddit Thread about Tariff Horror Stories in Montana

A recent experience for user No-Currency-5496 on the subreddit thread r/Missoula had me seriously scratching my head about recent changes to items shipped.  Those from out of country were being added a tariff to be paid upon receipt of the package.  And the prices were out of this world crazy.

In the original post, the user stated they had a received a package they ordered from a retailer in Canada.  But in order to receive it, there was a $204 tariff on a $100 item.  Ouch!  And as I scanned further through the thread, there were several instances where the price of the item was very much below the tariff fee.

Other responders also relayed some of their experiences when receiving packages, especially when ordered through Canadian retailers.  One consumer stated that they tried to buy business cards, but "They wanted $134 for the $40 package of cards. I refused."

Kind of mindboggling that you would potentially have to pay almost 4x the cost of what you ordered to get it.  To learn more about why these instances are happening, check the latest information from the US Department of Customs and Border Protection here.
