Recreational Fishing Just Got Better in Montana Waters
One of the best pastimes and traditions that I (hope) have passed on to my son and grandson is finding a creek, stream, river, pond or lake to drown a worm in. The fine art of wasting the day and not catching a thing. Best. Days. Ever.
Montana fishing enthusiasts will now have a new species of fish to find in limited areas of the state, and I have to say that I am pretty excited about the prospect of catching a few of these and getting them into a frying pan with butter and seasoning.

Recreational Fishing Just Got Better in Montana Waters
Growing up in the Highwood Mountains, many weekends were spent on Upper Highwood or Thane Creek fishing for brook trout. And I continue to hit those same streams today for fun and relaxation:

Anglers like me will now have a new way to chase those brook trout as the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks (MFWP) have announced a new species that has been crossed with brook trout and brown trout. The new "tiger trout fish" is being distributed in limited areas in waterways in region 4 of Central Montana. Fall stocking has begun at Bair Reservoir by the MFWP; tiger trout averaging around 6.5" in length and roughly 1500 of them were recently released in the waterway.
More Areas to be Stocked in Montana with New Tiger Trout Species
MFWP has added tiger trout to waterways within region 4 including:
- Crow Coulee Reservoir
- Hansen Reservoir
- Kinsbury Pond
- Lenington Reservoir
- Maiden Spring Pond
- Upper Carter Pond
This is the second stocking of the new species, with the fish coming initially from Wyoming eggs then grown at the Great Falls Hatchery. You can learn more about the new species here and check the video of the process of stocking the new fish below.
