A Picture Started All of This, even in Montana
As the saying goes, "a picture is worth a thousand words", but in this case, a picture turned into a national pastime that lives on today.
In 1933, a photographer was sent on assignment in Dayton, Ohio. He would stumble upon several young boys racing homemade cars during the summertime. The rest, as the saying goes, "is history" and the start of Soap Box Derby.
Get Ready to Build Your Own Soap Box Derby Race Car
Original race cars were built from soap boxes, packing crates, sheets of tin and anything the kids could scavenge and piece together to race. Today's races feature much more modern cars, even setting speed records through the years.

While the "All American Race" is held in Ohio, you do have a chance to build a car and race it in Helena, MT coming September 13-14, 2024. The 4th Annual Septemberfest Soap Box Derby is to be held down Cruse Avenue and 6th Avenue, ending at the walking mall area.
