Can You Leave Your Butter On The Counter?

That's a good question with a gazillion answers on the internet.  That's when you go to the one authority that is rarely disputed: Mom.

Mom Says Butter Is Fine On The Counter

for a few days.  If you go too long, especially when it's hot, your butter can go rancid.  My mom is always surprised that people are worried about this because butter generally goes so fast in her house.

Technically, How Long Is "A Few Days"

All Recipes went to some folks who really know their butter, Land O'Lakes.  Land O'Lakes recommends no more than 4 HOURS, but says a couple of days is fine.  After that, your butter will start to smell and taste off.

How Can I Tell If My Butter Is "Rancid"

I  don't use butter every day like my mom does, so I went to Medicine Net for the answer.

Even though butter is pasteurized and salted, does not give it an infinite shelf life.  In the refrigerator, I've read 3 months.  On the counter, from All Recipes, Land O'Lakes says 4 hours.  You read that right, 4 hours.

Storing Butter Safely (or Safer) On The Counter:

From Medicine Net:

  • Keep it in an airtight container away from sunlight
  • Leave it in the refrigerator on hot days
  • Monitor for rancid color, smell or taste
