All it took was one warm weekend around Central Montana, and I'm already itching to get out and do some camping!

Trust me, I know it's still entirely too early and the chances of getting snowed on remain relatively high.

But there's nothing like a few warm days too really kick off the cabin fever!

Unofficial Kickoff To Camping Season

At least in my mind, the unofficial kickoff the camping season here in Montana is Memorial Day weekend.

I can remember growing up we almost always went camping this weekend and I'll be honest nine times out of 10 we got snowed on!

Now, thankfully, we did have a camper, so it wasn't as bad as for those folks who were out tent camping.

But every once in a while, we got lucky and managed to dodge the snowstorms.

Obviously, folks head out long before Memorial Day weekend, depending on the weather to do some camping, but to me, this is the unofficial kickoff to the season.

Spring Camping In Montana

One way or another spring camping in Montana is not for the faint of heart.

As you well know, mother nature has a mind of her own and will change at a moment's notice.

So, if you are planning on hitting the backcountry to do a little camping this spring, make sure you are prepared.

Spring Camping Supplies

This by no means is a list of everything you need for spring camping in Montana, but rather a couple of things to think about if you're heading out anytime soon.

  • Grab a few extra tarps! These can be a lifesaver, especially if you're camping in a tent.
  • Bring dry firewood. I know there's plenty of dead wood out in the forest, but it's generally pretty wet and useless for fires.
  • Warm clothes. This seems like an obvious one, but there's been a handful of times that I was not dressed appropriately for the elements.
