For some folks in Montana, mule deer hunting might as well be its own holiday.

However, over the years, numerous diseases and changing habitats have stressed mule deer populations, leaving Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks looking for management solutions.

The organization seeks hunters' input as they rework their mule deer management plan.

No one understands the health and population of mule deer in Montana better than hunters.

Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks asks for your input on their next mule deer management plan.

“One of our guiding principles is to maximize the opportunity for public input of all stakeholders, and the workshops show our commitment to transparency in agency decisions and rationale. The more input from the public, the better,” Said FWP Director Christy Clark.

Mule Deer Management Goals

The main goal is to ensure the lifelong welfare of Montana's mule deer populations while balancing hunting opportunities and conservation efforts.

The agency hopes listening sessions will help convey the concerns and desires of hunters in Montana.

Statewide Workshops

FWP will be hosting listening sessions and workshops throughout the state.

  • May 12 – Bozeman (Region 3 Headquarters)

  • May 13 – Missoula (Region 2 Headquarters)

  • May 14 – Kalispell (Region 1 Headquarters)

  • May 19 – Billings (Region 5 Headquarters)

  • May 20 – Miles City (Region 7 Headquarters)

  • May 21 – Glasgow (Region 6 Headquarters)

  • May 22 – Great Falls (Region 4 Headquarters)

All workshops will run from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Mule Deer Populations In Montana

It's no secret that the deer populations in the Treasure State have fluctuated over the last couple of years.

Numerous factors have influenced these populations, from weather to habitat and disease.

Chronic wasting disease has also been a significant challenge for deer populations throughout Montana.
