Just when you thought you'd heard it all, you see something like meat-eating squirrels flash across the national news headlines.

Due to our number of squirrels here in Montana, this immediately caught my attention!

It's no secret there are somewhat aggressive and territorial squirrels here in the Treasure State, but rodent-eating squirrels.

That's a new one to me!

Rodent Eating Squirrels

Generally, squirrels are funny little rodents who love stuffing their face with seeds and nuts.

But recently, these quirky little animals are showing their darker side.

According to a study by the Journal of Ethology, squirrels in California have begun eating other rodents!

Yep, that's right.

Those furry little creatures generally associated with being herbivores are now devouring other animals.

According to the Journal of Ethology, it's not entirely uncommon for squirrels to be carnivores, but this is not the norm.

Why Squirrels Are Eating Rodents

The recent discovery was made during the behavioral ecology of the California Ground Squirrels Project, which was taking place at the Briones Regional Park in Contra Costa County.

The project examined how California ground squirrels adapted to their native grasslands in response to environmental changes.

Researchers also noticed that the Vole population had increased substantially in this area.

According to the report, scientists believe this vole infestation has led to the diet change of the California ground squirrel.

As long as those crazy little squirrels stay in California, we'll be OK here in Montana! ha-ha
