St. Patrick’s Academy’s Sudden Closure Leaves Academic Futures Uncertain

The Great Falls community was rattled to its core over the weekend as news broke out that St. Patrick's Academy High School would not be opening for the upcoming school year.

The news comes as a shock as the school year is just about to kick off for students, parents, and staff.

St. Patrick's Academy is Officially Closed

St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Conrad shared a letter from the Diocese of Great-Falls Billings to social media.

The letter, authored by the Bishop of Great Falls-Billings, Jeffrey M. Fleming, describes the decision to close St. Pat's Academy a "difficult" one.

"This is the most difficult decision that I have had to make as the Bishop," Fleming wrote. "After extensive efforts throughout the past several months to secure the necessary administrative leadership, including finding a full-time principal, and qualified faculty to operate our high school effectively, and after consultation with my advisory boards and our meeting last night, I have made the difficult decision that St. Patrick’s Academy High School will not open for the 2026-2027 school year."

"This decision comes with profound sadness, especially coming so close to the start of the school year."

Futures Left Hanging in the Balance

As you'd imagine, the timing of the news couldn't have come at a worse time. The closing leaves students, teachers, and parents in limbo with many students now wondering where their educational status stands.

"I am also aware of the impact that it has on each of you, especially our students," the letter says, "We explored numerous options and worked diligently to overcome the staffing and leadership challenges facing the school."

"Please know that this decision was reached only after careful discernment, consultation, and prayer. Like many of you, I had believed that the school would open this year; but the realities that we are facing in the final stages of preparation left us with no workable path forward for the start of the school year."

"Identifying Educational Options"

For those impacted who are wondering where to turn next, Fleming says they will work "closely with families" to help them get back on their feet.

"In the coming days, we will work closely with families to assist in identifying educational options for the upcoming school year," Fleming wrote, "We will also work with our faculty and staff to make sure they are cared for."
