One can only imagine what goes on behind the scenes with these big corporations and I have to wonder what in the world happened between UPS and Amazon behind closed doors.

UPS is distancing itself from Amazon in a move that will affect both employees and operations across the country according to an earnings call.

UPS Layoff And Closures

According to a report from Axios, 12% of UPS revenue was made up from Amazon deliveries but now, UPS is looking to operate "a more profitable, efficient business."

And that's bad news for some UPS employees. That's essentially a fancy way saying they're eliminating positions. The company said on the call they will be cutting 30,000 "operational positions" in 2026.

With plans to "further deploy automation across the network", this can only be seen as a sign that new technology like AI is once again eliminating the need for a human workforce.

In addition to the positions being eliminated, UPS also plans to close "24 buildings in the first half of the year" and possibly more later this year according to Axios.

How Will UPS Layoffs And Closures Affect Great Falls?

In Great Falls, we have just one UPS store to go with three additional "UPS access points" so it's unlikely that we'll be affected. As for Montana, however, there are 18 locations across the state so there's no telling if any of those locations or their employees will be affected.

With that said, we have to wonder if other companies around the world will follow suit and look to "deploy automation" across their networks? How will that affect industries and businesses here in Montana?

Only time will tell.
