Another Scam Targeting Montana Residents

Another day, another scam in Montana.

Sadly, with this one, simple courtesy gets you scammed.

What Is the 1-Ring Scam?

Have you heard of the 1-ring scam warning from the FTC? Basically you get a phone call from an unknown number from an area code outside of Montana.

It rings once, then hangs up. If you are like most people and return the call to see if it was an important call, you'll find yourself connected to an international number, which in turn racks up a huge phone bill as they keep you on the line for as long as they can.

It's gotten to the point that I don't even answer my phone unless it's someone I personally know and have saved into my phone.

How Spoofing Makes the Scam Worse

But that even could become a problem as well, as spoofing has become a new trick of scammers.

How that works is the scammer is able to trick your phone into believing the call is coming from someone else. They use this trick to impersonate law enforcement agencies along with local government agencies, and I bet it won't be too long before they're able to impersonate a family member.

Area Codes Linked to the 1-Ring Scam

Thankfully, Cheapism came out with a list of area codes that have been associated with the 1-ring scam to be on the lookout for.

While being aware of these area codes won't necessarily shield you from a spoofing scam, it can assist you in recognizing the 1-ring scam.

Scam Warning: Never Answer These Area Codes

These 7 area codes are most often associated with the 1-ring scam according to Cheapism, so it's best to just avoid answering their calls.
