It's well-known that Montana is facing a bit of a demographic shift.

Data has shown that by 2030, Montana will have one senior for every three working-age adults, which will make Montana one of the most senior-heavy states in the nation.

To put it in perspective, Montana is currently ranked sixth in the United States for its 65+ population, and that number is expected to surge by over 25% in the next decade.

This demographic shift is beginning to raise concerns about housing, caregiving, and the overall economic stability of our rural communities.

Growing Senior Care Crisis

As Montana's senior population continues to climb, unfortunately, the state's infrastructure is struggling to keep pace.

To further enhance the issue, since 2021, 16% of Montana's nursing homes have shut down due to staffing shortages.

Many of these are found in rural communities.

Cooperative Housing Study

A recent study by the Montana Cooperative Development Center took a closer look at the need for affordable and sustainable housing solutions in Montana.

The study highlighted the cooperative approach to the issue and emphasized the benefits of shared ownership and long-term community benefit.

Montana’s Care Workforce

In addition to the housing crisis, Montana's care workforce is also experiencing issues.

  • Direct care worker wages lag $2.28 behind other entry-level jobs.
  • Nursing home turnover rate: 63.2%—well above the national average.
  • 42nd in home care affordability, putting financial strain on families.

Montana ranks 33rd in the nation in terms of long-term care services.
