If you think you've heard it all, you're going to love this: there are groups of people around the country who believe Montana does not exist.

That's right, as in the state of Montana is "not real" and is completely made up.

Why Are People Saying Montana Doesn't Exist?

Perhaps it's a joke we just don't get or maybe these people truly believe Montana doesn't exist? There's no telling why this is even a thing but there are several discussions about the "non-existent" Montana in places like Facebook and Reddit.

On Facebook, there is a dedicated group simply called 'Montana doesn't exist.'

"I live in Montana, and can confirm, it doesn't exist," one person wrote.

"Great Falls, -9°. The picture would be something other than blank gray if Montana actually existed," a poster said with a literal photo of a gray square.

There was even a whole petition trying to get the government to admit that Montana doesn't exist.

If Montana Doesn't Exist, What Is... "Montana"?

One of the deepest theories can be found on the website for the petition.

"Montana does not actually exist," the petition organizer explains, "There is a giant lake where we think Montana is, and it is used by the Japanese as a fishing colony."

I know, it sounds bizarre to me too but don't worry! They have a proper explanation.

"During World War II, the Japanese actually had a land invasion of the west coast of the United States and made it all the way to the Rocky Mountains and made a stronghold in Montana," the petition reads.

"Japanese forces were pushed back everywhere except the lake. As part of the peace treaty between the United States and Japan, the Japanese maintained control over the lake, and they have had control over it ever since."

The organizer says the government won't admit Montana's not real because of the American flag: "50 stars is much more aesthetically pleasing than 49 stars."

If We're Not in Montana, Where Are We?

For those of us living in Montana, the petition organizer concludes his case with an attempt to plug all holes in his theory.

"If you do know someone from Montana, they are simply a pawn hired by the government to misinform the public," the petition reads, "And if you claim to be from Montana, you are simply living in a virtual reality world created by the government to make you think you're in Montana, when you're actually in an underground bunker at Guantanamo Bay."

"Face the facts and quit being sheep, MONTANA DOES NOT EXIST."
