Scary Great Falls Legends For Halloween chills
Sometimes the best ghost stories are the ones right in your backyard. Imagine my surprise when I saw one of Montana's most infamous ghost stories is from right here in Cascade County. And one of the most haunted bars in Montana is downtown Great Falls.
The Hitchhiker Of Black Horse Lake
The legend says you can be driving down the Highway 87 from Great Falls to Fort Benton headed toward Black Horse Lake, and in the distance, you'll see what looks like a male Native American hitchhiker. When you get closer, suddenly, he'll be on your hood, and it seems like he's stuck there. When you stop and get out of the car, he's just gone. There won't be any damage to the car. Eeesh.
The Lobby Bar
This story goes way back in the day to when the Davenport Hotel was above the bar. The Davenport hotel was rumored to be a brothel. A fire broke out, and many of the working girls died in the fire. It's said you can hear their screams to this day.
A man who was thought to be with the mob, CJ Peterson, used to run the bar. He's said to be seen wandering around the bar to this day. It's even said that you can see his image reflecting in a mirror in a picture taken in the bar that was decades after his death.
Nick Northern and Big Billy tell me that even now, sometimes bartenders will leave a shot and a quarter on the bar, only to come back and find the shot gone and the shot glass turned upside down over the quarter. Nick also added that in the basement, where the liquor was stored, sometimes vodka bottles would fall off the shelf even though there was a rail to prevent just that thing.
Spooky.
