What You Need To Know About Storm Chasing In Montana
If you've ever looked to the Montana horizon and saw a massive storm system passing by and had the urge to drive up to it and take a closer look, you've come to the right place.
Storm chasing can be one of the most exhilarating things you'll ever do, but it can also be one of the most dangerous.
Weather Knowledge
Before you get out in the field and begin storm chasing, do yourself a favor and learn the basics of weather.
I'm not saying you have to be a meteorologist, but you should at least understand storm structure and how they tend to move.
Not only will this enhance your chances of getting an epic picture, it will also keep you out of harms way.
Storm Chasing Supplies
Your list of supplies will ultimately depend on how serious you get about storm chasing.
If you're just casually chasing and don't plan on traveling far, you won't need many supplies.
However, if you plan on chasing a supercell for hundreds of miles, you need a few things with you.
- Amateur radio or some sort of communication other than a cell phone
- A printed map
- Camera
- 4X4 Vehicle
- Water and snacks
- Rain gear
- A change of clothes
Final Thoughts On Storm Chasing
- Always stay to the southwest of a storm cell
- If you see a blue-greenish hue in the clouds, that means aggressive hail!
Now, get out there and have some fun!
