False Spring Is Definitely A Thing In Montana
I'm sure you're familiar with the saying here in Montana: If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes.
Spring in Montana is hands-down one of the most volatile weather times here in the Treasure State.
False Spring
Although not quite as common as the weather saying above, false spring is something we know all too well here in Big Sky country.
If you're not familiar with the term, it refers to an unseasonably warm period in spring that tends to trick plants, animals, and even humans into thinking spring is just around the corner.
And then bam, next thing you know, snow and cold returns.

The Negative Impacts of False Spring
You might think the only negative impact of a false spring is that your hopes and dreams of warmer weather are taken away by snow and cold.
But this weather term can in fact play with more than just our emotions.
- Plants
- If false spring lasts a few days, some plants will snap out of hibernation and begin budding. If a significant freeze follows this warm period, plants can be damaged, and it may prevent them from blooming later in the spring.
- Animals
- Much like plants, animals can also be tricked by the warmer temperatures. This may cause animals like grizzly bears to come out of hibernation too early.
