Fishing News In Montana: Trout Tagging in the Upper Madison River
The Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks Department will be tagging trout in the upper Madison River this month.
This ongoing study examines trout recruitment, health, and adult mortality in the upper Missouri River Basin.
Earlier in the year, a staggering 8000 trout were tagged in the Big Hole, Beaverhead, Ruby, and lower Madison rivers, with anglers reporting over 1,000 catches.
Rewards for Reporting Tagged Fish
There are incentives for reporting tagged fish in Montana.
- Yellow tags are worth $100 each
- Blue tags enter anglers into prize drawings.
- Prizes include artwork, fly boxes, fishing equipment, and a guided trip on the Madison River.
- Blue tag reports are also entered into a grand prize drawing at the year's end.
How to Report a Tagged Fish In Montana
The tags attached to the fish's dorsal fin have a unique serial number.
Anglers are asked to clip the tag close to the skin and submit the report online.
