Gardening in Montana
I'm by no means an expert when it comes to gardening in Montana, but I do have a few years of experience and, more importantly, I've learned the hard way what not to do.
One of the most challenging things to do is waiting until the weather finally warms up to plant.
I can't tell you how many times I've planted a garden way too early and ended up losing plants or never having seeds germinate simply because it was too chilly outside.
So, with that said, it raises the question: when is the ideal time to start planting a garden here in Montana?

Ideal Time To Plant A Garden In Montana
Based on my experience and information from a few local experts, the best time to plant a garden is early to mid-May.
The further north you are, the later you'll want to plant.
Keep in mind that certain plants, like cucumbers, require some heat, so late May or early June is a better time.
If you have any questions about gardening in Montana, a great resource is the local Montana State University extension office here in Cascade County.
