What Montana Hunters Can Do With Extra Meat
In Montana, it seems like hunting season for something is always right around the corner. In this case, bow hunting season for most wildlife kicks off this weekend.
And with the start of the fall hunting seasons comes the annual question of "What do we do with all this extra meat?".
Here's an option if you're exceptionally lucky with your hunting but don't have enough room in your freezers. Consider donating the excess meat to the Montana Food Bank Network.
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks have teamed up with the Montana Food Bank Network once again to allow hunters to donate part of their legally harvested game to food banks all over Montana. The program is known as Hunters Against Hunger.
The meat has to go through a certified and licensed meat processor in order to be donated, so if you're the do-it-yourself type, you're going to have to find another way. On the other hand, the donated meat is typically processed either for free or at a reduced rate.
Donating is even more important as we head into the colder months, and meats are increasingly expensive. I don't know about any of you, but I've been choking when I see the prices at the grocery stores lately.
So to everyone hitting the outdoors for bow hunting, and everyone who will be doing so when the general seasons open up later on, good luck to you, and please keep the food banks in mind when trying to figure out what to do with your bounty.
