Giant Pumpkins: The Gourd-geous Love Affair

Ah, giant pumpkins, those colossal orbs of orange splendor! They may not have the charm of a fluffy kitten or the grace of a swan, but they've managed to capture our hearts in a way that only a massive vegetable can. Why do we love giant pumpkins?

First and foremost, giant pumpkins provide us with the perfect excuse to utter the phrase, "Oh my gourd!" with genuine enthusiasm. It's not every day you get to witness a vegetable that could moonlight as a boat.   If you've ever dreamed of sailing the high seas in a pumpkin, this is your chance!

They also bring out the competitive spirit in us. Every year, enthusiasts participate in pumpkin-growing contests, where the winner takes home the title of "Pumpkin King or Queen." It's like the Olympics for horticulture, except instead of gold medals, you win bragging rights and the admiration of your neighbors who can't believe the size of your gourd.

Joe Nigro from Lockwood Montana is hoping his pumpkin will set a Montana record. The current pumpkin record for Montana is 1,258 pounds set by Mike Cotter of Fairview in 2022. That pumpkin was weighed at the Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival in Rapid City, South Dakota, which is where Nigro will travel next week.  Get the full story here.

Furthermore, giant pumpkins offer a unique opportunity for creative expression. Some people transform these behemoths into elaborate jack-o'-lanterns that require a forklift to move.  Even Cinderella's carriage was made from a pumpkin.

Finally, giant pumpkins provide us with a much-needed reminder that size doesn't always matter.  Unless of course, you are entering a Giant Pumpkin contest.

So, whether you're a giant pumpkin grower, carver, or just an admirer of all things big and orange, remember: Love for giant pumpkins is a gourd-geous thing, and it's here to stay.
