Chance To Get Out On A Great Falls Dam
One of the unique things that sets Great Falls apart from almost any other city is the fact that it's home to five waterfalls and five dams.
Three of the falls have since been converted into hydroelectric dams, and two more have been constructed. All five dams power the city and surrounding counties and give the city its nickname—that being the electricity.
Bicyclists and hikers will have the opportunity to see the Missouri River and Cochrane Dam up close and personal next month!
Cochrane Dam is the most recently built dam in the Great Falls area, constructed in 1958.
Cochrane Dam
Northwestern Energy will open Cochrane Dam to hikers and bicyclists on June 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This dam is usually closed to the public, but in conjunction with Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, the damn will be open to the public.
Lewis and Clark Trailhead
- This is a 3.6-mile hike/ride starting on the paved trail towards the Crooked Falls overlook and then following marked trails to the dam. The trail is moderate in difficulty.
- This is a 3.5-mile hike/ride following the marked trails the entire way. It is a dirt single-track trail with rolling hills and an elevation change of 300-400 feet. The trail is moderate in difficulty.
Rainbow Trailhead
- A 2.5-mile hike/ride from Rainbow Trailhead on the gravel service road, with rolling hills and 100-200 feet of elevation change. This road is traveled by NorthWestern Energy vehicles, so travel in a single file and stay to the right to stay out of their traffic.
- A 3.7-mile hike/ride from Rainbow Trailhead onto the River’s Edge Trail, with 300-400 feet of elevation change, rolling hills, and some single-track spots.
Hiking Details
Expect at least a five-mile hike or ride, and be prepared with proper footwear and plenty of drinking water.
Keep in mind that there is little to no shade anywhere along the trail, and this is rattlesnake country.
Participants should arrange a shuttle or park a vehicle at their ending location.
Park staff will not provide a shuttle service.
