I don't know about you, but I find it slightly annoying anytime I read about a scam or fraud case. There's something about people cutting corners to make a buck that just rubs me the wrong way.

Recently, the Montana Department of Justice's Medicaid Fraud Unit just discovered the "largest scheme" in the unit's history... and yeah, it might grind your gears a little bit.

Licensed Social Worker Ordered to Pay for Defrauding Taxpayers

So, Attorney General Austin Knudsen just announced that Kevin Patrick Maxwell, a licensed social worker and "former owner of Providence Mental Health Services", defrauded Montana taxpayers out of $2.4 million!

Million with an "M"!

"MFCU’s investigation found that from January 2022 to November 2024, interns and non-licensed PMH staff, who were not authorized to bill Medicaid, provided mental health sessions that PMH then billed Medicaid," the Montana Department of Justice said in a release, "Additionally, PMH was not a licensed mental health center during a portion of that period, which is a requirement for mental health professionals seeking their licensure to bill Medicaid."

"Maxwell closed PMH in June 2025 and later moved to Texas."

A judge has ordered Maxwell to pay back every single dime which gives us an exact total of $2,391,277.55.

The Montana Department of Justice's Medicaid Fraud Unit's Work is Far From Over

I can only imagine what else is going out there if there are people who are trying to get away with defrauding taxpayers out of $2.4 million.
