I suppose it's no surprise that attractive folks generally have it a little bit easier in life.

But when it comes to the business world, do they actually have that much of an upper hand?

Well, according to an analysis of data from the National Bureau of Economic Research conducted on the website Spring Nature Link, attractive folks may not have as much of an edge as some previously thought.

People Love Attractive People

Whether we like to admit it or not, people are incredibly vain and tend to judge people on their looks.

Having worked in the television industry for quite some time I can speak on this firsthand.

You would not believe the number of emails and phone calls we received to the newsroom about how somebody was dressed or how they looked on television.

But ultimately, how does this correlate to the business world?

Link Between Looks and Earnings

Over the years, economists have studied the so-called beauty premium and ugliness penalty when it comes to the workplace and business.

It's commonly been thought that attractiveness generally leads to more money and better promotions.

But that may not be the case, according to this research.

Data was analyzed from the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health to investigate this topic further.

Results

  • According to their study unattractive individuals consistently earned more than then individuals who are considered to be average looking or attractive.
  • The study looked closely at health, intelligence, and personality, which had much greater impacts on pay than looks.
  • In other words, beauty isn't everything when it comes to higher earnings.

Ugliness Premium

Shockingly some of the most unattractive individuals actually were earning more money according to this study.

So, there you have it, I guess all of us with a face for radio still have some hope of earning a decent wage. haha
