Over the last couple of weeks, a few posts have circulated on social media about folks hearing loud booms around Great Falls.

Personally, I haven't heard anything out of the ordinary, but that doesn't mean it's not happening.

Needless to say, working on the radio, my schedule is pretty crazy, so I'm not out and about when normal people are.

But one thing is for sure: it's a little bit unnerving when numerous folks are reporting on social media that they've heard strange noises in our town.

Loud Booms in Great Falls, Montana

As I said before, I have not heard these loud booms, but I do have a pretty good idea of what they might be.

If you've spent any time near 6th St., Southwest, and the railyard, you've likely heard some pretty loud booms from time to time.

I've never quite understood the reason behind this, but at the railyard, train cars slammed together pretty frequently.

When they slammed together, there was an incredibly loud boom!

Trust me, it's incredibly frustrating when you're in the middle of your backswing at Hickory Swings Golf Course, and the next thing you know, a train car collides with another train car.

Weather And Sound Waves

The recent weather may have something to do with more folks reporting the loud bangs.

Anytime we get cloudy conditions, and a really low cloud deck, sound tends to amplify and travel further than it normally would.

However, the colder air does it slow the sound.

Long story short sound waves can travel quicker in warm air.

But I'm betting with the cloudy conditions due to the recent snow, those loud bangs from the railyard are traveling a little bit further than they normally would.

Hence, why more folks are reportedly hearing loud booms in Great Falls.

I could be totally wrong.

I would love to hear from you on what your thoughts are regarding the recent reports of loud booms.
