As the temperatures climb this spring, spiders will soon become a more common sight here in Montana.

Although they can be a little bit creepy and crawly, smashing them should not be your immediate response.

Why You Shouldn't Kill Spiders

Think of it this way: Spiders are hunters, not just freeloaders!

They kill insects like mosquitoes, cockroaches, stinkbugs, and even other spiders!

Believe it or not, spiders consume 400 to 800 million tons of insects globally every year.

So yes, you may not like them crawling around your house, but would you prefer all those other bugs?

Spiders Are Indicators of a Healthy Home Ecosystem

Now that you're all freaked out from looking at some of the deadliest spiders here in Montana, if you are seeing spiders around your home, that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

What this does mean is that you have a balanced environment; not that your home is dirty or unclean.

At the end of the day, though, spiders thrive in homes, where there is plenty of available pray.

Most spiders you find in your home are not interested in biting you, in all reality it's pretty rare.

These scared little creatures are simply looking for a quick meal!

️Killing One Spider May Invite More Problems

If you're not yet convinced to let that friendly little spider in the corner live, get this, killing a spider can actually backfire on you.

Generally, spiders are relatively territorial, and if you kill one, this can't open the door for others to move in.

What You Can Do Instead of Killing Them

  • Relocate it. Use a cup and a piece of paper to move it outside gently.

  • Seal entry points. If you don’t want them indoors, ensure windows, vents, and cracks are sealed.

  • Let nature take its course. If it’s not bothering you, let it stay. Spiders often live for just a year or two, and in that time, they can eliminate thousands of other pests.
