Heads Up, Montana: If “Lt. Mullen” Calls You, HANG UP ASAP!
Some people truly have no shame, am I right? The shameless people I'm talking about are the ones who will do absolutely anything for a dollar...
They'll even posing as law enforcement.
Billings Police Department Warn of New Scam
Billings police department shared an important post to their Facebook regarding a scam that uses fear tactics and 100% Grade A dishonesty in an attempt to get the hard-earned money of innocent people.
"We have recently received multiple reports of a person making random phone calls to residents where he identifies himself as a ranking member of the Yellowstone County Detention Center," Billings police said in their post.

"This person identifies himself as Lt. Mullen. The Yellowstone County Detention Center does not have a Lt. Mullen on staff."
According to Montana law, "a person who in any way impersonates a person charged with enforcement of parts 1 through 5 by the department, by the use of its seal or a counterfeit of its seal or in any other manner, is guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction shall be fined not less than $100 or more than $500 or imprisoned for not more than 1 year or both fined and imprisoned."
How Does the Police Scam Work?
According to Billings police, the scammer is contacting Montanans with the promise of getting a loved out of jail. The scammer tells the innocent victim they'll accept the requested amount (sometimes hundreds, sometimes thousands) via Zelle, Cash App, and even cryptocurrency. You and I can both agree those all sound like major red flags, right?
"The caller may say the incarcerated person will be released with an ankle monitor and placed into an intervention program, and that once completed, the ankle monitor can be returned for a full refund," Billings police said, "This is FAKE.

"The Billings Police Department and the Yellowstone County Sheriff's Office want to make it clear that they never solicit money or requests payment of fines over the phone."
Watch yourself out there! If you think you're being targeted for this scam, hang up and contact police as soon as possible with every bit of information you can.
